Computer eye strain is a form of dry eye, caused by water evaporation of in the eye's protective tear film covering. When too much water is lost, discomfort is experienced. If allowed to continue, tear film water loss can cause chronic dry eye, corneal ulceration and numerous eye dehydration diseases, potentially leading to visual impairment and blindness.
Computer eye stain and dry eye symptoms should never be ignored. Sharon Kleyne recommends several proactive measures to prevent computer eye strain and soothe the symptoms. Eye misting accomplishes both.
Eye misting is the application of natural water to the eyes' tear film in the form of an ultra-fine mist. The mist hydrates the natural tear film in the same way that a humid environment hydrates the eyes. The eyes simply absorb the tiny water droplets from the air. Once the tear film's water content is returned to normal, symptoms usually disappear.
Formulated Eye drops contain little free water and mostly consist of artificial chemicals that can flood the tear film and wash away beneficial natural tear film components such as enzymes, proteins and antibodies. Eye drops can also be difficult for some individuals to apply and the label dosage much not be exceeded.
The tear film is 99% water and the only pure water, not bound in chemicals, will naturally hydrate the a water deficient tear film. Under some circumstances, eye drops may be helpful in sealing in moisture, if applied immediately following a water mist. .
The ideal eye mist application would use an all-natural water that is very pure, has a light mineral solute content with no heavy metals, and has a near neutral or slightly acidic pH balance (7.0 or slightly under). The natural tear film is pH neutral or slightly acidic when you wake up in the morning and becomes more alkaline (above 7.0) as the day wear on.
Eye mist is applied simply by pointing the container towards the face and pressing the actuator. There is no need to aim directly at the eyes or hold the eyelids opened. Just aim the mist towards the face, with a two to three second sweep around the eye area. As long as the surrounding air is misted, the eyes will benefit. The entire process should take less than five seconds.
